  1. WELCOME TO CLARISIMPACT 2.0B!
  2. ----------------------------
  3. Thank you for choosing ClarisImpact 2.0B. This Read Me file documents some
  4. additional tips that may prove helpful when using ClarisImpact 2.0B. This
  5. document provides information on:
  6.

  10. I. TECHNICAL NOTES AND TIPS
  11. -----------------------------
  12.  
  13. A. Installation
  14. Follow the instructions in the installation guide to install ClarisImpact.
  15. You can't copy the files to your hard drive using the DOS copy command,
  16. because the files are compressed to fit on fewer disks. The setup program
  17. decompresses files during installation.
  18.  
  19. You must be running SMARTDRV.EXE to install ClarisImpact. Claris recommends
  20. using default values for SmartDrive.
  21.  
  22. ClarisImpact is a 32 bit application. Before installing ClarisImpact on a
  23. computer running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, you must 
  24. install Win32s, which is included in this package. Note: If you are using 
  25. Windows 95, do not install Win32s.
  26.  
  27. Some virus checking software may interfere with the installer and prevent a
  28. complete installation. If you have trouble installing, turn off any virus
  29. checking software before starting the ClarisImpact Installer. You can turn
  30. virus checking back on after installation is successful.
  31.  
  32. You cannot start ClarisImpact from a directory whose name contains upper
  33. ASCII characters (for example Θ, ⌐, ú). This is a limitation of Win32.
  34.  
  35. B. Out-of-memory error messages
  36. If you encounter an error message that indicates there is not enough memory
  37. to perform an operation, Claris recommends:
  38.      ╖ adjusting your Virtual Memory setting (see Performance tips for 
  39.       Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 below)
  40.      ╖ removing any unnecessary drivers and TSRs from the CONFIG.SYS file
  41.       to free up more memory in DOS
  42.      ╖ closing other applications and ClarisImpact documents that are
  43.       running in the background
  44.  
  45. C. Performance tips for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11
  46. 32-bit applications such as ClarisImpact 2.0B require that Virtual Memory
  47. is on. To improve performance on computers with 8 MB of memory or less,
  48. Claris recommends setting virtual memory to permanent and using the 
  49. suggested size for your virtual-memory setting as displayed in the Virtual 
  50. Memory dialog box. This value is typically twice the size of physical memory, but
  51. should be at least 11,700 K or 11.7 MB.
  52.  
  53. To set virtual memory:
  54.     1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the 
  55.        Control Panel icon, and then double-click the 386 Enhanced icon.
  56.     2. Click Virtual Memory and then click the Change.
  57.     3. Select Permanent from the Type pop-up menu.
  58.     4. Click the check box next to Use 32-Bit Disk Access. Note: This
  59.        setting is NOT recommended for laptops running on battery power.
  60.     5. Click OK.
  61.  
  62. If the suggested size of virtual memory is less than twice the physical
  63. memory installed on your computer, you might need to increase your free disk
  64. space by removing unwanted files or defragmenting your hard disk.
  65. Note: DOS 6.0 users can use DEFRAG.EXE.
  66.  
  67. If you are an experienced Windows user and you have adjusted your virtual
  68. memory settings as described but still feel your performance could be
  69. improved:
  70.      ╖ In DOS, run:
  71.         DEFRAG
  72.  
  73.      ╖ In DOS, run:
  74.         MEMMAKER
  75.  
  76.     ╖ Change the following settings in the CONFIG.SYS file:
  77.         FlLES=60
  78.         STACKS=9,256
  79.  
  80.     ╖ Add the following line to the CONFIG.SYS file:
  81.         BUFFERS=10
  82.  
  83.     ╖ Add the following line to the [WINDOWS] section of the WIN.INI 
  84.       file:
  85.         DefaultQueueSize=16
  86.  
  87.     ╖ Add the following lines to the [386enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI
  88.       file:
  89.         DMABuffersize=64
  90.         XLatBufferSize=128
  91.         MaxBPS=768
  92.  
  93.     ╖ Delete the following lines from the [386enh] section of the
  94.       SYSTEM.INI file:    
  95.         EGA80W0A.FON...
  96.         EGA40W0A.FON...
  97.         CGA80W0A.FON...
  98.         CGA40W0A.FON...
  99.  
  100.     ╖ Always use SmartDrive!
  101.  
  102. D. Printing
  103. If you have trouble printing, try installing an updated printer driver,
  104. available from your printer manufacturer or Microsoft Corporation. For
  105. instructions on installing a driver and configuring your printer, see the
  106. the Control Panel documentation in the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
  107. ClarisImpact requires a valid default printer driver, NOT the Generic/Text
  108. Only driver. To select or change the default printer:
  109.      1.    In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the 
  110.     Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Printers icon.
  111.      2.    Select a printer from the Installed Printers list and click Set As
  112.     Default Printer. If no printers appear in the list, see your 
  113.     Microsoft Windows User's Guide for instructions on installing 
  114.     printers.
  115.  
  116. E. Video cards and drivers
  117. If your screen doesn't display objects correctly, you may have a problem
  118. with your video driver. Try changing the resolution to 640x480 or 800x600
  119. or try changing the number of colours displayed (for example, 256, 32K,
  120. millions of colours).
  121.  
  122. To verify a video driver problem, change the video driver to Windows 
  123. standard VGA and run ClarisImpact. If the problem disappears, contact the 
  124. video card manufacturer for the latest version of the video card driver or 
  125. use the driver that is included with the Windows installation.
  126.  
  127. F. ClarisImpact INI file settings
  128. If you experience either of the problems listed below, make the suggested
  129. changes to the [ClarisImpact] section of the CLARIS.INI file in your Windows
  130. directory:
  131.     ╖ Problem:
  132.       Colour/gradient palettes do not draw completely, or show up with 
  133.       black or missing colours/gradients
  134.           Suggested setting:
  135.           Cache Palettes = 0
  136.  
  137.     ╖ Problem:
  138.       Tools are not drawn correctly, or display as black
  139.           Suggested setting:
  140.           BitmapTools=0
  141.  
  142. G. Fonts
  143. If fonts do not display or scale correctly (for example, they are clipped or
  144. overlap), Claris recommends:
  145.     ╖ Making certain a valid printer driver is selected as the default 
  146.       and that is it NOT the Generic/Text Only driver
  147.     ╖ Enabling TrueType fonts (see below)
  148.     ╖ Making certain the standard Windows fonts, such as Arial, are
  149.       properly installed
  150.  
  151. To delete or reinstall standard Windows fonts, see the Microsoft Windows
  152. User's Guide.

  154. To enable True Type fonts:
  155.  
  156.     ╖ In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double-click the 
  157.       Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Fonts icon.
  158.     ╖ Click TrueType, and then click Enable TrueType Fonts.

  160. H. Sharing files between the Macintosh and Windows
  161. ClarisImpact 2.0B for Windows has the same file format, user interface, and
  162. features as ClarisImpact 2.0B for the Macintosh. You can create a 
  163. ClarisImpact document on Windows and edit it on a Macintosh computer, or
  164. vice versa. Therefore, if you work with both Macintosh and Windows versions of
  165. ClarisImpact, or if you collaborate with colleagues who use ClarisImpact 2.0B
  166. for Macintosh, you can work without translating files or learning a 
  167. different program.

  169. However, if you want to transfer files between platforms via diskette, you
  170. must use a file transfer program that lets you create and use PC- formatted
  171. diskettes on a Macintosh. To copy the ClarisImpact files onto a PC formatted
  172. disk, follow the directions in the documentation for the file transfer 
  173. program you are using. When you use a multi-platform server (such as Novell 
  174. Netware) to transfer files from Macintosh to a Windows computer, you can use
  175. the ClarisImpact documents right off the server. No file transfer program is 
  176. required.

  178. When sharing files with systems running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups
  179. 3.11, make sure that your ClarisImpact filenames follow DOS filename
  180. conventions (8 characters or less) and end with the .CID extension. (For
  181. ClarisImpact Library files, use the .CLB extension.)
  182.  
  183. Fonts, margins, page breaks, and some graphics might display differently 
  184. when transferred between Macintosh and Windows. You might have to adjust the
  185. margins and page breaks in the transferred file to restore the original
  186. appearance.
  187.  
  188. You can minimise font problems by installing and using the TrueType fonts
  189. that ship with ClarisImpact for both Macintosh and Windows. When a file is
  190. opened, ClarisImpact first checks to see if each of the fonts in the 
  191. document is installed in the current system. If a font is not installed, 
  192. ClarisImpact checks its font mapping information to substitute an 
  193. appropriate font. Font mapping information is stored in the Claris Font 
  194. Map file inside the Claris folder in your System folder on Macintosh and 
  195. in the [ClarisFontMap] section of the CLARIS.INI file in your Windows 
  196. directory on the PC. If a font is not listed in the font mapping file, 
  197. it is mapped to Geneva on the Macintosh and to Arial on the PC. You can 
  198. manually edit and/or add entries to the font mapping information.

  200. I. Network installation issues
  201. ClarisImpact can be installed and run simultaneously by multiple users off 
  202. of a server. If Windows is also being run off of the server, Windows must be
  203. installed using SETUP /N.
  204.  
  205. Multiple simultaneous users can share ClarisImpact styles. However, if
  206. simultaneous users edit the same style, only changes from the last save are
  207. retained. For this reason, Claris recommends that users who access
  208. ClarisImpact from a server and who want to customise styles should store
  209. their CISTYLES directory on their own hard disks. 
  210.  
  211. Multiple users cannot simultaneously open the same ClarisImpact document or
  212. library.
  213.  
  214. J. Software requirements for the DataDraw templates
  215. If you want to use the database or spreadsheet templates that are installed
  216. in the DataDraw directory, you must have FileMaker Pro or Microsoft Excel 
  217. 5.0 installed on your system. Instructions for using each template are 
  218. located on the Help screens in the FileMaker Pro and Excel template files.

  220. II. GREAT FEATURES OF CLARISIMPACT 2.0B

  223. A. Cross-platform support
  224. ClarisImpact 2.0B is now available for Windows and Windows 95 as well as the 
  225. Macintosh and the Power Macintosh. You can easily exchange files between 
  226. platforms, because no file-format translation is needed.

  228. B. Automated data transfer with DataDraw(TM) 
  229. You can automatically convert information from FileMaker Pro, Microsoft 
  230. Excel, or any application that exports data to a text file into a number of 
  231. supported ClarisImpact business graphics. DataDraw turns names, dates, and 
  232. numbers into organisation charts, timelines, tables, data charts, or 
  233. calendars. Try it out with the templates provided in the DataDraw directory.

  235. C. Enhanced styles
  236. ClarisImpact styles have been professionally designed to reflect today's
  237. business standards. These pre-designed combinations of fonts and colour
  238. schemes help you quickly communicate your data in an attractive graphic
  239. format.

  241. D. Powerful presentation builder
  242. Organise your thoughts before they appear on your slides with the integrated
  243. ClarisImpact outliner. Use the slide sorter to view and rearrange your 
  244. entire presentation at a glance. Include speaker notes that help you give 
  245. your presentation. Add pizzazz to on-screen presentations with over fifty 
  246. slide transitions and slide markup.

  248. E. More flowchart symbols
  249. Create a wider variety of flowchart diagrams using nine symbol sets. Symbol
  250. sets include: Telecommunication and Transportation networks, Decision Trees,
  251. Brainstorming, Root Cause Analysis, Total Quality Management, and Block
  252. Diagrams.

  254. F. Symbol creation controls on flowchart connectors
  255. The flowchart tool includes an indicator showing connector text placement
  256. and autogrow/autoshrink symbols. Create flowcharts quickly and easily with
  257. these connectors.

  259. G. Flexible organisation charts 
  260. Make complex organisation charts fit where you need them. Quickly resize an
  261. entire organisation chart by clicking and dragging while boxes in the chart
  262. automatically grow and shrink around text. The new Fit To Page feature 
  263. prints an organisation chart of any size on one page.

  265. H. Versatile scheduling timelines
  266. ClarisImpact timelines work well for planning simple projects and tracking
  267. milestones. Grid lines automatically adjust to match your project dates,
  268. tasks can be linked to and unlinked from each another, and any task can be
  269. designated as a milestone.

  272. Create complex tables easily. In addition to organising text and numbers,
  273. tables work like spreadsheets by supporting industry-standard formulas and
  274. summations.

  278. creating them. Charts can be edited and styled in a variety of ways.
